The subjects in Carole Schoetel’s paintings are sculptures that are exhibited in front of the Collectivité building in Saint-Barthélemy. These sculptures are based on a musical suite written by a French composer, which transforms animal attributes into music.
When she came across the sculptures, their balance felt improbable, nearly absurd: an elephant on a sphere, a throne, a tiger. And yet, nothing felt forced. Everything was held together.
Carole Schoettel has removed the sculptures from their location and placed them in her paintings, transforming and highlighting their presence through the use of gold leaf and engraved traces.
Carole Schoettel is a French painter born in Casablanca. She trained at the Atelier de Sèvres in Paris and the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, before working alongside Constantin Nepo — mural painter to King Hassan II of Morocco. Her work has received several international awards and is held in private collections worldwide.
