Laurent Benoit's Shells series documents the collection of the Corossol seashell museum — 9,000 shells gathered from around the world. The museum is now closed.
Shells are deeply connected to Caribbean life and culture, as objects of the sea, sources of food, exchange, adornment and tradition. In Saint Barth, the collection in Corossol became a unique expression of the island's relationship with the ocean.
From these 9,000 shells, Benoit selected a few pieces and photographed them one at a time, placing them almost on a pedestal and celebrating the beauty and importance of these small, often overlooked objects. He transforms them into controlled, almost sculptural images using the lighting techniques of fine jewelry photography. The result is precise, full of light, and commanding
